If you wear an Apple Watch, Garmin, Fitbit, or Oura Ring, your resting heart rate is probably one of the first numbers you check each morning. I understand the appeal. It is simple, visible, and seemingly precise. After years in cardiac rehab and eight years comparing wearable data, I have also seen people panic over one imperfect reading. The useful question is not whether today's number is good or bad. It is whether the number makes sense for you and whether the trend is changing.
What resting heart rate actually measures
Your resting heart rate is the number of times your heart beats per minute while your body is relaxed and not actively exercising. It reflects how hard your heart is working to circulate blood at that moment. A lower value often appears in well-conditioned endurance athletes, but lower is not automatically healthier. Genetics, medications, sleep, stress, illness, hydration, temperature, caffeine, and training load all influence it.
For many adults, a resting heart rate between 60 and 100 beats per minute falls within the commonly cited clinical range. That broad range is not a personal performance score. A healthy recreational runner might sit near 52, while another healthy adult might normally be near 78. A number outside the usual range can be meaningful, but context matters more than a single measurement.
The best comparison is your own baseline. If your resting heart rate is usually 58 and it shows 66 for three mornings, that change deserves attention even though 66 is not automatically dangerous. It could reflect a poor night of sleep, a hard workout, alcohol, a developing infection, or simply a sensor that lost contact with your skin.

How accurate are watch and ring readings?
Wearables estimate resting heart rate using optical sensors that shine light into the skin and measure blood-volume changes. They generally perform best when you are still, the device fits snugly, and the skin is warm. They can struggle during movement, with a loose band, heavy tattoos over the sensor, cold hands, or irregular rhythms.
In my own testing, the overnight trend from a Garmin, Apple Watch, and Oura Ring has been more useful than any isolated daytime reading. The devices do not always agree to the exact beat, and they do not need to. A five-beat difference between brands is less important than a steady rise across several nights.
For a cleaner reading, wear the device in its usual position, keep the fit secure without cutting off circulation, and compare measurements taken under similar conditions. If your watch reports an unexpected number, sit quietly for five minutes and count your pulse manually for 30 seconds, then multiply by two. That quick check cannot diagnose a problem, but it can reveal an obvious sensor error.
What can raise your baseline?
A temporary increase in resting heart rate often has a boring explanation. Hard training creates recovery demands, and your nervous system can remain activated after a long run or heavy lifting session. Dehydration reduces circulating fluid, so the heart may beat faster to maintain circulation. Poor sleep, emotional stress, fever, and a late alcoholic drink can produce the same effect.
Caffeine is another variable worth testing. You do not need to eliminate coffee, but measuring before your first cup makes comparisons more consistent. Some prescription medicines also affect heart rate, including certain drugs used for blood pressure, asthma, thyroid conditions, or attention disorders. Never change a prescription based on a wearable trend.
A sustained rise is more useful than a one-day spike. If your usual value is 55 to 60 and it stays above 65 for a week, reduce intense training, prioritize sleep and fluids, and look for other symptoms. Your body may be asking for recovery rather than another workout.
What can lower resting heart rate?
Consistent aerobic exercise can lower resting heart rate over time because the heart becomes more efficient at pumping blood. That adaptation is one reason a trained runner may have a lower baseline than a sedentary adult. The change usually develops gradually over weeks or months, not overnight after buying a new watch.
Better sleep, less alcohol, improved hydration, and regular easy movement can help too. I would start with those fundamentals before purchasing a premium wearable or obsessing over recovery scores. A $30 heart-rate strap is not a substitute for a sensible training plan, and a $799 watch cannot turn six hours of sleep into eight.
Very low readings are not automatically a problem, especially during sleep or in trained athletes. However, a low number accompanied by fainting, dizziness, unusual weakness, chest discomfort, or shortness of breath deserves prompt medical attention. Symptoms change the situation; the number alone does not tell the whole story.

How to track the trend without becoming fixated
Choose one consistent measurement instead of collecting every available number. For example, review your overnight resting heart rate after waking, before coffee, and record a seven-day average. Most watch apps do this automatically, although the exact calculation differs by brand. Garmin calls attention to trends through its health statistics, Apple places measurements in the Health app, and Fitbit emphasizes long-term health metrics. The labels differ, but the practical goal is the same.
Write down unusual factors beside the number: a 10-mile run, a late meal, travel, a stressful workday, or the first day of a cold. After a month, patterns become easier to see. You might discover that your baseline rises after back-to-back hard sessions and returns after two easy days. That is actionable information. A single decimal point is not.
Trust the trend, not the reading. I keep that phrase on my coaching notes because it prevents both needless worry and false reassurance. Wearable data is a prompt for better questions, not a diagnosis.
When to contact a medical professional
Contact a clinician if your resting heart rate changes persistently without an obvious reason, especially if the change comes with fatigue, palpitations, dizziness, fainting, chest pain, or breathing difficulty. Seek urgent care for severe or sudden symptoms rather than waiting for your watch to confirm them. Consumer wearables can identify patterns and sometimes flag irregular rhythms, but they are not equivalent to an electrocardiogram or a clinical evaluation.
Bring a short record to an appointment: your typical range, recent readings, medications, exercise changes, sleep, and symptoms. That information is far more helpful than saying, “My watch says something is wrong.” A clinician can decide whether you need an exam, blood work, an ECG, or no further testing.
The smartest use of resting heart rate is wonderfully unglamorous. Establish your baseline, measure consistently, notice meaningful changes, and respond to how you feel. If you are shopping for a wearable, choose the device you will actually wear every night. The best tracker is not the one with the longest feature list; it is the one that gives you reliable context without taking over your morning.
