The Number That Rarely Lies
If I could keep only one metric from every wearable I have tested, it would be resting heart rate. Not the flashy recovery scores. Not the sleep-stage pie charts. Not the daily strain numbers that try to grade your life. Just the simple average of how fast the heart beats when the body is truly at rest.
I learned this the long way. Eleven years in cardiac rehab showed me that resting heart rate is one of the few consumer-accessible numbers that consistently tracks with real physiological load. When it drifts upward for days or weeks while training stays steady, something is usually cooking—fatigue, coming illness, accumulated stress, or inadequate recovery. When it settles back down, the system is generally finding its feet again.
The beauty of it is its stubborn simplicity. Unlike HRV, which can swing wildly from a cold room or a late meal, resting heart rate tends to move more slowly and with clearer meaning.
What Resting Heart Rate Actually Tells You
At its core, resting heart rate reflects how hard the heart needs to work to meet the body’s basic needs when you are still. A lower number often means the heart is more efficient—pushing out more blood with each beat—so it does not need to beat as often. Endurance training commonly drives it down over months. Dehydration, heat, poor sleep, alcohol, and early-stage illness commonly push it up.
The key is that useful information lives in the change, not the absolute value. A runner whose resting heart rate usually sits at 48 and suddenly spends a week at 56 is telling a different story than someone whose normal is 62 and hits 65 for a day.
I tell athletes to stop comparing their number to internet charts labeled “athlete” or “excellent.” Your baseline is the only baseline that matters.
The Range That Is Actually Normal

Population averages float around 60 to 100 beats per minute for adults, with well-trained endurance people often landing in the 40s or low 50s. Those broad ranges are almost useless for decision-making. What matters is your personal zone.
After watching hundreds of patients and athletes, I use a simple practical filter:
A consistent rise of 5–7 beats above your normal multi-week average for more than three or four days deserves attention.
A jump of 10 or more beats that stays elevated is a stronger signal—often worth backing off training or checking for other symptoms.
Day-to-day wiggles of 2–3 beats are usually just life.
Women can see additional fluctuation across the menstrual cycle. Heat waves and travel raise the number for almost everyone. None of these make the metric worthless; they simply require context.
How I Track It Without Obsessing
I look at resting heart rate once a day, usually the overnight average the watch provides, and I glance at the seven-day trend. That is enough. I do not check it five times. I do not let a single elevated morning cancel a planned easy run unless the trend and how I feel both agree.
Practical habits that keep the data clean:
Wear the device consistently at night.
Avoid checking the number the moment you sit down after walking around—give yourself a few true minutes of stillness if you are taking a manual reading.
Note obvious confounders: late alcohol, very hard previous day, poor sleep, or waking up overheated.
Compare against your own rolling average, never against someone else’s screenshot.
When the trend rises and stays up, I treat it as information, not emergency. Extra sleep, lighter training, more water, or simply an easier day often brings it back. If it keeps climbing while other symptoms appear, that is when you pay closer attention or talk to a professional.
A Story From the Clinic That Still Guides Me
I once worked with a patient who tracked his resting heart rate religiously after a mild cardiac event. Every small increase sent him into a spiral of worry that itself kept the number elevated. We eventually agreed he would only look at the weekly average, not the daily value. Within two weeks his anxiety dropped and the resting rate settled. The data had been accurate. The frequency of inspection had become the problem.
The same pattern appears with healthy runners. The metric is powerful precisely because it is stable enough to trust. It loses power when we demand it explain every single morning.
Putting It to Work
Resting heart rate will not tell you your exact training zones or the quality of your REM sleep. It will quietly show whether the overall load—training, life, stress—is exceeding recovery. That single job is more valuable than most of the colorful dashboards devices love to display.
Use it as a trend light, not a daily grade. Let the seven-day picture matter more than today’s isolated reading. Pair it with how the legs feel and how eager you are to train. When those signals line up, the decision becomes obvious. When they conflict, the resting-heart-rate trend is usually the one worth trusting first.
It is not perfect. No single number is. But among everything a wearable can measure, resting heart rate remains the most honest everyday signal I have found.
Trust the trend, not the reading. This is one trend that consistently earns the attention.
